Of God and Discontentment

There is a discontentment in the human soul that comes from God, and there is a discontentment that is not from God. In general, the person who is submitted to God will find contentment: “Godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment” (1 Timothy 6:6).

In the Middle East and North Africa in early 2011, we are witnessing great discontentment. This discontentment is being directed toward authoritarian political structures, but the contentment goes much deeper. There is an oppression that is not merely political or economic, but a discontentment that suffocates the soul. In history, we read, “the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God” (Exodus 2:23). It is interesting that the Arabic word for this book of ‘exodus’ is ‘khurooj.’ And that is the literal command being given by Arabic people to their leaders to exit the country.

There is a sense that the current discontentment being exhibited in the Middle East and North Africa is not the common type of discontentment we are used to observing. There is a sense that this might be the kind of discontentment that comes from God. Of course, only God himself can satisfy the human desire for contentment. No political leader can ultimately do it. For that reason, we are praying that the people of the Middle East and North Africa will find that ultimate contentment that comes from God through relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
